the questions families actually ask

Before you choose a home.

Ask these anywhere you tour — and here is how we answer them.

Who answers the phone at night?

Our main line, 412-567-3094, is answered around the clock. Nights and weekends are staffed — you will always reach a person, and you can ask for the nurse on duty any time you want a quick update on how the day has gone.

What is included in the monthly rate?

Care is built around each resident's individual care and support plan. Included services cover the activities of daily living — eating, bathing, dressing, toileting, transferring, personal hygiene — along with medication management, laundry, housekeeping, chef-prepared meals, and social and leisure activities.

What happens when my loved one's needs change?

Care levels can change without changing rooms, neighbors, or the faces at breakfast. If hospice care is ever needed, trusted outside hospice agencies come to Mount Vernon, so no one has to leave the room that feels like home.

When can we visit?

Visiting hours are 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and family is always welcome at the table. Later visits are handled with care for roommates and neighbors — just talk to us.

How will we know how they're doing?

We call you first if there is ever a change in condition, a fall, or a hospital transfer — you name a primary contact so your family never hears different pieces of news at different times. And the family photo album on this site fills all month long, so you can see the day you're missing.

Who actually runs the home?

Mount Vernon is family-owned and family-run. The owners aren't in an office somewhere off-site — they're in the halls, at resident birthday celebrations, and are an everyday presence.

when needs change

Moving from personal care to memory care.

For many families those words carry a heaviness. Here is what the move actually means at Mount Vernon.

What does memory care actually mean here?

Memory care simply means additional supervision and specialized support. Our team is trained to ease confusion, maintain familiar routines, and gently come alongside your loved one when fleeting memories make daily life harder. The goal isn't to take over — it's to help your loved one keep being themselves, with extra hands close by when they're needed.

Does daily life change?

Memory care residents enjoy the same warm meals, welcoming community, and personal attention as our other residents — with a few thoughtful differences. Routines are built around each resident's preferences, there are outdoor spaces for fresh air and sunlight under supervision, and family is welcome anytime.

Does it mean giving up independence?

Families often fear losing independence, giving up on them, or a loss of self. What memory care actually offers is the opposite: a support system, the right help at the right time, people who know and welcome them, and a place where who they are is honored every day.

How long does adjustment take?

Adjustment unfolds in roughly three phases — the first days, the first weeks, and the settling-in period that follows. Appetite and sleep may dip at first as the surroundings change; that's part of a normal transition, not a sign something is wrong. As faces and routines become familiar, a truer baseline returns, and our staff learn exactly what comforts your loved one.

How do we start the conversation?

Talk to us early — before it feels urgent. Choosing memory care doesn't mean you've stopped caring; it means you've found a team to help carry the weight, so you can go back to being who your loved one needs most: their daughter, son, husband, wife, or dear friend.
